It was a cold drizzly morning on October 14th, 2009 and the sloppy wheat field I was walking across in the
dark was quite noisy!  I made it to my tree stand on Kelly's Cattle Ranch here in Kansas with just enough
time to get settled in and my bow hung before the Sun crested the hills to the East of me.  I had put out
some corn the night before as I left my stand in hopes to bring the BIG 10 that I had seen down closer to
get a good shot.  I sat there all day without even a doe coming by.  And this seemed odd, as I had seen
dozens of deer every day so far for the past week!

I sat there all day and just as the Sun was started to peak below the hills to my Southwest, I heard a large
group of does heading my way.  I hadn't had more than 4 deer below my tree stand at any given time this
week and now I had 12!  I knew this would be my last chance and just as it was getting at that point where
you can't see your sight pins, this monster walks in chasing the does around and sniffing the ground.  I
had a short window of opportunity and took it....right between the shoulders and burried my G5 Striker
down halfway on my GT XT Hunter 7595.  The '09 PSE Dreamseason had done the job quickly! I would
have to wait till morning to get my trophy out.  I'm very happy with my first Whitetail Buck.

I missed the 2008 Colorado archery season due to a my second deployment to Iraq.  Even in Iraq I was
able to hunt the elusive jackal with my bow.  I could not wait for the 2009 Colorado archery season to
arrive after 9 days of hard hunting I was down to my last day of hunting.  While still hunting in a good area
I spotted a huge Muley.  All I could see was his wide tall back forks.  I slowly stalked into bow range a
waited for the deer to turn broad side.  The deer started to turn then stared right at me I knew the deer
sensed my presence but I hoped the camo would hide me well enough to get a shot off.  Finally the deer
put his head down, I came to full draw and settled my pin on his vitals while he burned holes threw me.
The shot felt good but I immediate started to shake and questioned the shot.  We wait forty minutes
before my buddy Jay and myself picked up a good blood trail at the shot site.  We followed the blood trail
for about 50 yards then I told Jay lets not push this deer so we waited another 30 minutes when we stood
up and took two steps we spotted the deer expired less than 10 yards from where we were waiting.  The
deer green scores 170 Pope & Young inches gross and has a 28 inch outside spread. My new Archery
Hut Hoyt Katera XL performed incredibly well this season.  Thanks Archery Hut for all the support!!

This is from my latest hunt in South Africa. I took two Impalas on this hunt measuring 22 and 21 inches. It
was a great hunt but I learned to respect African game a lot more because I did a spot and stalk hunt. It
was a lot tougher then I thought it was going to be. All of the game is very alert and to spot and stalk
here you have to be comfortable at shooting things at 40 or 50 yards which is a big adjustment from
hunting in the states and being able to get within 20 yards. The big impala was an amazing hunt I got to
watch them feed into a field and then I watched this ram fight with another one while I got into position. It
was truly and amazing hunt. The second impala was fighting when I shot him. I guess they are starting
their rutting season. I am planning my next hunt in late April or early  March I hope to take an eland or
wildebeest but like hunting anywhere you have to see what the field offers.

Erinn drew a Colorado Bull Moose license in 2006 with one weighted preference point.  She was 17
years old.  Weldon called the bull in, by using his home-made moose call and by raking sticks on trees
and bushes to simulate rack thrashing.  The moose came charging in to within 30 yards of Erinn, and
she shot it with a .300 Winchester Short Magnum.  Yes, she shot it herself.  Her Dad could not see her
or the bull when she made the shot.  It scored 154 4/8 Boone and Crockett.  The spread was 51 2/8
inches.

Weldon drew a Colorado Bull Moose license in 2009 with six weighted preference points.   Weldon
turned down a nice Bull within the first 5 minutes of legal shooting light on opening morning, deciding to
hold out for a Bull with wider palms.  On the second morning of the season, Weldon found this Bull and
shot him with his Mathews Bow, Axis arrows, and Stryker broadheads, all purchased at the Archery Hut.
Weldon’s Bull scored 176 3/8 Pope and Young and is the current Colorado State Archery record.  Its
spread is 48 1/8 inches.
